Social Networking, Web 2.0 and Event Marketing

Expo Magazine' s October issue has a good overview article on the Wizardy of Web 2. 0

Here is a good overview from the article:

Top 10 Social Media

Tech Geek Blogger Robert Scoble defines social media as Internet media that allow people to interact in some way.

By that criteria, these are the most trafficked English-language social media sites, ranked by Alexa.com .
Each site offers one or more service that enable user interaction, including personalized content, media sharing, blogging, networking, instant messaging, chat rooms and e-groups. 1. Yahoo!
2. Microsoft Network
3. Google
4. YouTube
5. MySpace
6. Orkut
7. Facebook
8. Hi5
9. Blogger.com
10. Friendster

If you look at the basic services provided by the Top 10 social media, essentially, they are providing interactive connections. Now how does that relate back to a b2b trade show?

Take Facebook for example, it is personal, interactive, timely and provides connections. Last summer when I was employing a college student for childcare, I noted that even though she was away from her college friends, she seemed to know how their summer was going and where they were - week by week. Facebook was a key connection for her. She and her friends posted where they were vacationaing, traveling, working etc. Connections!

Social media and networking presents tools to build momentum and excitement leading up to the opening day of an event. Social networking is expanding the number of business contacts a person can make prior to your event. LinkedIn is a great example of easy-to-implement social networking tool.

What social media and networking elements build the momentum?

  1. Attendees finding others with the like interests and business challenges

  2. Attendees identifying exhibitors with potential solutions

  3. Timely news that helps potential attendees know the insights and business trends

A LinkedIn group can provide you prospects, attendee value and media buzz prior to your event. Let's not make this complicated -- add the connections points for your customers and the loyalty will build!

Orkut.com is the online social networking services operated by Google. To become a member you have to register by putting user ID and password. You would just need to setup an account with a profile letting people know about you. A person having interest in the profile can post messages to your profile. Here you can create new accounts; send scraps, messages, testimonials or invitations; or create communities. You can send invitation to your friends who would then be added to your list of friends. Orkut.com is a place where users can express their own beliefs and values, and Community Standards help foster a positive environment in doing so. You can avail of the search friends option to find out for your friends with whom you are not in touch right now. This is a good place to develop friendly relations with people and even developing business contacts. This is being widely used by people of all age groups all around the world.
I have done this same thing for my website fortunehotels.in. You can find it, just search "Fortune Park Hotels" there.
